July 18 - Brazil needs to raise 70 million real (£25 million/$38 million) a year if it is to achieve its target of sending a team of more than 200 and finishing among the top five nations at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, it has been estimated.

Andrew Parsons, the President of the Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB), revealed that they opened talks with the the country's Sports Ministry to establish how they can increase the current budget from 30 million real (£11 million/$17 million).

The CPB already shares in the revenue raised by the Brazilian National Lottery as under the country's law two per cent of all money raised has to go toward funding the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) and the CPB.

"Having the the Games at home is a great opportunity for us to move forward also in the medals table," said Parsons.

Brazil's Paralympic team has already risen from a squad of only 63 it sent to Sydney in 2000 to 188 in Beijing two years ago.

The team won a total of 47 medals, including 16 gold, finishing ninth overall.

The stars of the team were swimmers Andre Brasil and Daniel Dias, who each won three gold medals.

The CBP has already launched a strategy to try to improve its ranking to seventh at London in 2012 and top five in 2016, when it hopes to pick a team of more than 200 athletes.

"We have the goal of being present in all 20 sports on the programme in 2016," said Parsons.

"In 2008, we were present in 17.

"If we could maintain our ninth position at London 2012 it would be a great result.

"But we have set a target moving at least two more positions in the medals table."
