Greg Rutherford rounded off his annus mirabilis in the Letzigrund Stadium tonight as he added his first International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Diamond Race long jump title to the Olympic, world, European and Commonwealth titles already in his collection.

The storm which had turned the track into a stream two hours before the final session of the 15th International Association of Athletics World Championships may have passed, but electricity remained in the Bird’s Nest stadium tonight as Chinese athletes, perhaps inspired by the unlikely silver earned by their men’s 4x100 metres sprinters the previous night, added two more of the same colour.

Genzebe Dibaba, controversially selected only for the 5,000 metres at next month’s International Association of Athletics Federations World Championships in Beijing four days after breaking the 22-year-old world record in the 1500m, will double up in China - and her coach, Jama Aden, believes she is capable of becoming the first woman under 3min 50sec for the latter distance.

Genzebe Dibaba tonight broke Qu Yunxia’s 22-year-old women’s world 1500 metres  record at the International Association of Athletics Federations’ (IAAF) Diamond League meeting in Monaco with a time of 3min 50.07sec.

Ethiopian athlete Genzebe Dibaba and two-time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic have scooped the top prizes at the Laureus Sports Awards after they were unveiled as the winners at a ceremony in Shanghai.
