May 16 - World heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis (pictured) won the battle of the British golden girls as she destroyed Olympic 400 metres gold medallist Christine Ohuruogu in the 150 metres at the Manchester Great City Games today.

Ennis stormed to an impressive time of 16.99sec to win the race by a comfortable margin ahead of Shaunna Thompson from the Sale Harriers as Ohuruogu finished in a disappointing third.

Ennis, who was racing at the distance for the first time in a carrier, said: "I’m really pleased with that.

"This was a brilliant race in a brilliant atmosphere and I hope they keep this amazing event going for a long time."

But despite Ennis’ victory, the star of the show in Manchester was America’s Tyson Gay who set a world record for the straight 200m with a stunning performance.

The world 100m silver medallist dismantled a stellar field to clock 19.41 and beat the legendary Tommie Smith’s 44-year-old mark by 0.09.

And Smith, who is perhaps best known for performing "Black Power salute" alongside fellow American John Carlos on the medal podium after he won gold in the 200m the Mexico City 1968 Games, was trackside to witness Gay's astonishing performance.

Smith said: "I thought it was a great race and the man is a true professional in this area."

Gay, who has no doubt sent a warning to his biggest sprint rival Usain Bolt with his majestic performance, added: "It was tough.

"It was a great race, the fans were great and I hope we can have an event like this in America."

In the days other events, British hurdler Andy Turner claimed two impressive victories the 110m and 200m hurdles while injury-plagued sprinter Mark Lewis-Francis showed glimpses of his top form as he claimed victory in the 100m in 10.21.

Britain’s Laura Turner won the women’s 100m race in 11.61.
