October 6 - Air India will be the official carrier of the Commonwealth Games 2010 in New Delhi, it was announced today.

The airline, the national flag carrier of India, said that as part of the deal it could run special charter services to accommodate teams and tourists coming to the event.

The airline, whose history dates back to 1932 when J. R. D. Tata flew a single-engined De Havilland Puss Moth carrying air mail from Karachi's Drigh Road Aerodrome to Bombay's Juhu Airstrip via Ahmedabad, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee to be the official carrier during the Games, which is scheduled to be held between October 3 and 14, 2010.

Arvind Jadhav, the managing director and chairman of Air India, said: "Air India has become the first company to be associated with the Commonwealth Games, and we will put our best foot forward as an official carrier."

He said that the national carrier would consider re-routing and upgrading of aircraft as per the requirement depending on the size of foreign delegations.
