During the Olympics, 250 teams of youngsters between 16 and 18-years-old will join adult counterparts, meaning about 70,000 volunteers will be in place to help during the Games.

Teams will vary in size and ensure that the youngsters have as positive an experience as possible, as well as meaning that London 2012 can fulfil its duty of care to them and to enable them to broaden their skills and experience.

The recruitment process begun, with applications for more general roles available from the London 2012 website from September 22.

London 2012 human resources director Jean Tomlin said: "The Young Games Maker programme is incredibly exciting as it has allowed us to identify a dedicated offering of roles which will allow us to harness young people's enthusiasm for London 2012 and guarantee 16 to 18-year-olds will have the chance to play their part in the greatest sporting event on earth."

London 2012 is also working with REACH, Action for Blind People and other organisations to ensure that it can reach as broad an audience as possible.

They are encouraging youth clubs and community groups to persuade youngsters to take part in the volunteer programme.

Specialist roles, such as water polo ball retrievers, will be sourced through national governing bodies for those particular sports.

Minister for Sport and the Olympics Hugh Robertson said: "The Young Games Maker programme will give those aged 16 to 18 a fantastic opportunity to play a role in the world's greatest sporting event and gain worthwhile experience in volunteering.

"I would encourage everyone to get involved and gain a valuable addition to their CV."
