altNOVEMBER 2 - A EUROPEAN ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS will be held in the same year as the 2012 Olympics it was announced today, as exclusively revealed on insidethegames seven months ago.

Currently the championships are held every four years, with Barcelona due to host the next event in 2010 but, as first reported in insidethegames in April, the European Athletics Association (EAA) are now to switch to holding the event every two years from 2012. The 2012 Championships are sure to cause controversy, coming as they will shortly before the London Olympics.

It is planned to finish the championships at least four weeks before the Olympic athletics events begin in early August but organisers are also looking to avoid a clash with the Euro 2012 football tournament which is also being staged that summer and is likely to end in early July.

Christian Milz, director general of European Athletics, said: "The rationale behind the additional European Athletics Championships taking place every even year is obvious.

"That is, to create more awareness and visibility for our sport.

"We have always felt that the numerous benefits from this are clear.

"The equation is very simple.

"More success for European Athletes means better television for European broadcasters and audiences, and more European stars to inspire the next generation of athletes.

"Of course, I can understand that some people are uncomfortable with changes, but rest assured, we are listening to, and considering, all the opinions from our key stakeholders and acting on them to make it a win-win situation for everyone."

It is expected that the host city for the 2012 championships will be made next October.

Meanwhile, European Athletics has also announced that its European Cup team competition will be revamped with a host of new rules and an increase in the number of teams taking part.

It will be renamed as the European Athletics Team Championships, the first such event being staged in 2009.

There will now be 12 teams in the main Super League event, while several field events will be shortened.

Milz added: "Naturally, I can understand that some athletes will be a little uncomfortable about getting less attempts in the field events, but it is our firm belief, after discussing this new concept with a number of athletes and coaches, that it will produce a far more exciting event for the spectators both on TV and at the stadium."

The shake-up has been largely brought about by falling interest in the current format, from fans, media and sponsors alike.
