Former Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales, embroiled in the World Cup kiss-gate scandal, is poised to stand trial, a court said on Monday.

Rubiales kissed Spain player Jenni Hermoso on the lips as she approached to receive her medal following her team's triumph over England in the Women's World Cup final in August of last year. Following charges and an investigation, the 46-year-old resigned amidst widespread criticism from entities such as the Spanish government and several current and former Spanish players.

Public prosecutors handling the case announced last month that they were pursuing a two-and-a-half-year prison term for Rubiales, who maintains his innocence regarding the incident. According to Marca, he will now face trial for the incidents, as well as for alleged subsequent coercion, along with former Spain manager Jorge Vilda.

The publication states that the third division of the Criminal Court has made the ruling by dismissing the appeals against the judge's order in the case, Francisco de Jorge, filed by Rubiales, Vilda, former director Albert Luque, and marketing executive Ruben Rivera. It's reported that the Chamber deemed the contents of the appeal to contain evidence aligning with the description of a crime related to sexual freedom and another related to coercion.

The court purportedly stated that the legal ramifications "of the kiss and consent cannot be evaluated at this juncture."

In an indictment forwarded to the judge, public prosecutors expressed their desire for Rubiales to face a one-year imprisonment if found guilty of sexual assault at trial, along with an additional 18 months for coercion, related to his purported efforts to persuade the footballer to support him publicly following the World Cup kiss incident.

They are also reportedly asking for Rubiales to be disqualified from working in sports during the sentence and be banned of communication with Hermoso or communicating with her for four years. There is no date set as of yet when Rubiales will be in the dock for the hearing.

Spanish public prosecutors had additionally requested Rubiales' arrest concerning alleged financial irregularities during his tenure at the helm of the Spanish FA. Earlier this month, he was detained as part of an ongoing corruption investigation in Sydney, Australia, unrelated to the incident at the World Cup.

His arrest, however, is connected to purported financial improprieties during his tenure as the head of the Spanish FA, centering on business transactions believed to involve hosting the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia. Nevertheless, despite his arrest on unrelated charges, Rubiales remains subject to potential repercussions for his actions last August.
