Gabriela Martínez and María Renee Rodríguez of Guatemala won the first gold medal of the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago for the independent athletes team as they clinched the women's doubles title in racquetball.

Guatemala is banned from competing under its own flag in the Chilean capital as the country's National Olympic Committee is currently suspended.

Last year, the country's constitutional court provisionally suspended several of the Guatemalan Olympic Committee's (COG) statutes and regulations as well as the election of the Executive Committee chaired by Gerardo Aguirre.

Aguirre was recognised as the winner of the COG's elections by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), but a court named Jorge Alexander Rodas as the victor

The IOC which does not allow Government interference in national bodies, suspended the COG last October following ongoing legal and governance disputes.

Martínez and Rodríguez defeated Argentina's María José Vargas and Natalia Méndez 11-2, 8-11, 14-12, 11-6 to win gold at the Racket Sports Center.

"Having other letters on the back does not mean that we stop being Guatemalan, so Guatemala will always be represented and that is why we also leave our hearts and leave everything of ourselves until the end," said Martínez.

The pair upgraded the silver they won at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games.

"Gabi always told me to 'calm down, calm down', we're going to get there and I'm coming in a very good tournament, so I'm happy," said Rodríguez.

Elsewhere in racquetball, an all-Bolivian men's singles final went to Conrrado Moscoso who beat Carlos Keller 11-2, 13-11, 14-12.

The women's singles final was an all-Mexican affair which went to Paola Longoria for the fourth Games in a row.

She backed up her Guadalajara 2011, Toronto 2015 and Lima 2019 golds with a 11-9, 11-8, 11-4 success over Montserrat Mejía.

Longoria has now won 10 Pan American Games titles in all.

Mexico also collected the mixed doubles crown as Rodrigo Montoya and Javier Mar beat Canada's Samuel Murray
and Coby Iwaasa 6-11, 11-7, 12-10, 12-10.

The mixed doubles was won by American siblings Adam and Erika Manilla, who defeated Diego García and María José Vargas of Argentina, 11-4, 11-4, 11-6.
