After finishing the qualification round in third position, Kelly got better as the competition wore on, clocking 7.85sec in the quarter-finals and 7.69 in the semi-finals before registering 7.52 in the final.

Kelly produced her personal best (PB) time after compatriot Emma Hunt was ruled to have false started in the gold-medal contest.

"I’m completely blown away, so excited to go to Paris," said Kelly.

"The goal coming into this event was to win and to get the Olympic ticket, but I knew it was going to be tough.

"I had a little bit of a rough qualifier, I slipped on my first one, so I had to pull through on the second one, and then the perfect final round, getting faster each time and setting a new PB in the last race."

Hunt had already sealed an Olympic quota place for the US after placing second at the International Sport Climbing Federation Climbing World Championships in Bern in August.

Andrea Rojas of Ecuador claimed bronze in Santiago with a time of 7.59 after her opponent Sophia Curcio of the US slipped.

While the US enjoyed a sport climbing one-two, Brazil dominated the opening day of skateboarding competition.

Leal, the Olympic silver medallist, became the first-ever skateboarding champion at the Pan American Games when she secured the women’s street crown.

The 15-year-old moved to the top of the standings with a first run score of 76.03 points before registering 76.72 and 84.23 in the trick segment to finish on 236.98.

"I think it's very important, of course, because it brings more confidence to us Brazilians," said Leal.

Leal was joined on the podium by compatriot Pâmela Rosa who notched 211.34 after a first-run score of 73.17 followed by trick scores of 60.72 and 77.44 for silver.

Paige Heyn, the 15-year-old skateboarder who is the youngest member of the American squad, sealed bronze with 176.35.

Rabelo became Brazil’s second skateboarding gold medallist when he sealed the men’s street title with an impressive total of 264.45.

After scoring 79.55 points in the first run, Rabelo then starred with trick scores of 91.15 and 93.75 to cement top spot.

Peru’s Angelo Caro totalled 256.80 for the silver medal, while Colombia’s Luis Gonzalez scored 247.82 for bronze.

"The level of competition was very high," said Rabelo.

"All the skaters were so good and, for me, wearing Brazil's colours and representing this big country is very gratifying."
