New Zealand and Argentina have advanced to the Rugby World Cup semi-finals following thrilling victories against Ireland and Wales, respectively.

World number one ranked side Ireland lost 28-24 to the three-time champions New Zealand at the Stade de France.

The result marked a fourth consecutive quarter-final defeat for the Irish and also brought the curtain down on captain Johnny Sexton's international career.

The side's record points scorer Sexton announced this World Cup would be last and looked dejected at full-time following another heartbreak.

Tries from Leicester Fainga'anuku, Ardie Savea and Will Jordan helped the All Blacks claim the narrow win.

New Zealand-born players Bundee Aki and Jamison Gibson-Park got Ireland's scores, in addition to a penalty try.

However, it was not enough as their 17-match winning run came to a tight end.

Earlier in the day, Argentina ended Wales' journey with a comeback victory as they prevailed 29-17 at the Stade de Marseille.

Warren Gatland's side started promisingly getting a 10-point lead, helped by a Dan Biggar try, but they were eventually pegged back by four Emiliano Boffelli penalties.

Tomos Williams restored the Welsh lead with a fantastic effort before two late tries from Joel Sclavi and Nicolas Sanchez sealed the win.

A key decision was made by referee Karl Dickson on which the match swung.

Dickson, who was an injury replacement for Jaco Peyper, ruled that Argentine lock Guido Petti had not committed any foul play when his shoulder caught the head of Wales centre Nick Tompkins in a ruck.

Pumas prop Joel Sclavi went on to score shortly after to give his side a 19-17 lead.

It was a fourth successive tournament in the last eight for Wales under head coach Gatland, but it was not to prove a third semi-final appearance.

The two winners from today will meet in the last four on Friday (October 20) for a place in the final.

The tournament is set to continue tomorrow with the remaining quarter-finals as England take on Fiji in Marseille before hosts France meet South Africa in Saint-Denis.
