Matthias Kyburz won two individual gold medals at the European Orienteering Championships in Verona.

The Swiss athlete topped the podium in both the individual sprint and knock-out sprint as he enjoyed a dream competition in the Italian city.

Kyburz, already a multiple world and European champion, got home in front of Kasper Harlem Fosser in the individual sprint, with the Norwegian taking silver and Finland's Tuomas Heikkila the bronze.

In the knock-out sprint, Kyburz defended his title as Jonatan Gustafsson and Emil Svensk came home for Sweden in second and third respectively.

"A fantastic week in Italy," said Kyburz.

"For me a wonderful season, a dream to end it with two European golds.

"We will see what next year will bring me, but I am very motivated."

The event doubled up as the latest leg of the International Orienteering Federation World Cup season.

Sweden's Sara Hagström won the women's sprint as she surprisingly pipped team-mate Tove Alexandersson into silver as Simona Aebersold of Switzerland took bronze.

Alexandersson was able to defend her knock-out sprint title with Elena Roos of Switzerland taking silver and the bronze going to her team-mate Natalia Gemperle.

There was a further gold for Sweden in the sprint relay thanks to Hagström, Alexandersson, Gustafsson and Martin Regborn.

Kyburz missed out on a third gold as the Swiss won silver, with Finland earning bronze.
