The World Curling Federation (WCF) has announced that mixed doubles will feature at the International University Sports Federation (FISU) Winter World University Games for the first time at Turin 2025.

Eight teams are set to enter the event with the aim of etching their names in FISU Games history in two years’ time.

Mixed doubles will feature on the programme along with the men’s team and women’s team events that have been part of the Games since 2003.

The discipline made its Winter Olympic debut at Pyeongchang 2018 before being included again at Beijing 2022 where Italian duo Stefanie Constantini and Amos Mosaner triumphed.

"I am thrilled that the Torino 2025 will be the first FISU World University Games to have mixed doubles curling as an official competition event," said Scott Arnold, head of development at the WCF and chair for curling on the FISU Technical Committee.

"And how fitting after Italy won a gold medal in mixed doubles at the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022.

"This addition will allow 16 more student athletes to experience a multi-sport event while representing their university and country on a world stage.

"And it demonstrates how the discipline of mixed doubles is growing globally."

FISU Games winter director Milan Augustin claimed the mixed doubles was "just the beginning of the future evolution" of curling.

"FISU is very proud of having mixed doubles in curling in Torino, the city where university sports have its roots," said Augustin.

"With this additional sport discipline, we can give a good opportunity to more curlers enjoying the FISU Winter Games within high international standards competition, that is our goal to achieve within all other sports as well.

"Moreover, we see a huge evolution of curling that becomes very popular among all student athletes around the world. FISU, after having a good relationship with the World Curling Federation, is trying to promote curling worldwide as much we can."

Turin 2025 President Alessandro Ciro Sciretti added: "Mixed doubles curling is a discipline that has a special place in the hearts of us Italians, thanks to the historic gold won in February 2022 at the Beijing 2022 Olympics.

"I am sure that the Italian Ice Sports Federation and its President, Andrea Gios will honour our event by presenting their best student-athletes in the Torino 2025 FISU Games.

"We are delighted to welcome new competitors from all over the world."

Turin is set to play host to the FISU Winter World University Games from January 13 to 25 in 2025.
