The National Basketball Association's (NBA) all-time leading scorer LeBron James is reportedly keen to represent the United States at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The US faced the disappointment of missing out on the podium at the men's International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Basketball World Cup for the second consecutive edition in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia last week, but is seeking a fifth consecutive Olympic title at Paris 2024.

Most of the NBA's leading players were not part of the team at the FIBA World Cup, but The Athletic has reported 38-year-old Los Angeles Lakers star James wants to return to the Olympics.

James previously contributed to American golds at Beijing 2008 and London 2012 and a bronze at Athens 2004, but declined to participate at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.

He is regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, and has won four NBA titles, most recently with the Lakers in 2020.

His previous successes came with the Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers, and he has featured in the NBA All-Star Game on 19 occasions.

The Athletic also reported James hopes other leading players such as Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Anthony Davis, Jayson Tatum and Draymond Green will be available.

Curry has never previously played at the Olympics, Durant has won golds at the last three editions, Davis featured at London 2012, Tatum at Tokyo 2020 and Green at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.

The US lost 113-111 to eventual winners Germany in the semi-finals at the FIBA World Cup and 127-118 in overtime to Canada in the third-place match.

However, it was enough to earn one of the two Americas qualifying places for Paris 2024.

Four of the remaining 12 places in men's basketball at Paris 2024 are available through qualifying tournaments, with hosts France, South Sudan, Canada, Japan, Germany, Serbia and Australia all assured of their spots.

Basketball group phase matches at Paris 2024 are due to be held at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille, which had been the source of a dispute, before the Bercy Arena in Paris stages knockout ties.
