There was home joy on the second day of the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) World Championships here, where Mira Sjövall won Finland's first gold medal.

Sjövall triumphed in the women's individual patterns third dan event, beating Argentina's Lara Rossel 2-1 in the final.

The home favourite had dominated another Argentinian athlete in Maria Fernanda Sanchis 5-0 in the semi-finals, with her opponent taking bronze along with Paraguay's Naomi Moriya.

Building on their two golds from yesterday, Romania stayed top of the medals table through their success in the women's team power test.

Romania triumphed with 1,000 points in a tiebreak match, with New Zealand taking silver and Norway bronze.

It was a successful day for Norway, who claimed two titles.

Mats Lind won the men's patterns first dan final 4-1 against Germany's Vadim Oudolnyi, and Ann Linnea Hole prevailed in the women's patterns second dan decider 5-0 against Sweden's Ellen Sjöberg.

A further six nations claimed their first golds in the adult competition at the ITF World Championships, which is for athletes aged 18 and over.

Hoong Wai Lee overcame Uzbekistan's Shokhjakhon Ergashev 5-0 in the men's patterns third dan final, while victory in the second dan category went to Japan's Yoshimasa Inagaki by the same scoreline against Ireland's Finn Martin.

Canada's Sean O'Neil was the other winner in men's patterns competition, taking gold in the fourth to sixth dan category 3-2 against Malaysia's Chun Weng Wong.

Scotland's first gold came courtesy of Jemma Swinburne, who beat Alicja Slian of Poland 3-2 in the women's patterns first dan final, while at fourth to six dan Silvia Farigu of Italy emerged victorious 3-0 in the final against Colombia's Honey Ospina.

Chile were the other nation to get off the mark for their gold medal tally, with Stefano Vomiero triumphing in the men's 75 to 81 kilograms sparring event.

He beat Bartosz Bien of Ireland 4-1 in the final.

Tampere is also hosting the ITF Junior World Championships for athletes aged 15 to 17 in which Argentina lead the medals table with five golds, and the inaugural Pre-Junior World Championships for competitors aged 12 to 14 which has Ukraine top of the standings with four golds.

Tomorrow is set to mark the penultimate day of the ITF World Championships.
