The New York Knicks' RJ Barrett excelled at the Indonesia Arena in Jakarta for Canada's 101-75 win against Latvia to take top spot in Group H.

The small forward notched up 22 points and five rebounds while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander also starred with 27 points.

It is the first time since 1986 that Canada has won three World Cup games in a row.

"I give these guys a lot of credit," said Canadian coach Jordi Fernandez.

"We were not doing the right things.

"We played against a very good team, very well-coached with all their fans."

Despite the loss, Latvia finished the initial group stage in second to progress to the next round following their shock win over Tokyo 2020 runners-up France earlier this week.

Germany battered Finland 101-75 at the Okinawa Arena to stroll into the second round while Australia took second ahead of co-hosts Japan with a 109-89 win in Group E.

"Obviously it's nice to go into the next group 3-0 [win-loss record], but we're just in the beginning of what we want to do," said Germany manager Gordie Herbert.

"The peak of the mountain is here, we're halfway up.

"We have higher expectations."

It was Lithuania that remained undefeated in Group D as they beat Montenegro 91-71 in their final pool fixture at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila.

Montenegro still advanced thanks to previous wins while Egypt beat Mexico 100-72 to avoid last place.

Co-host nation the Philippines ended their tournament without a win in Group A as they suffered a narrow 90-83 defeat to Italy who sealed second place to qualify.

The Dominican Republic got the better of Angola 75-67 to take pole position.

The first round is set to conclude tomorrow with the final fixtures of Groups B, C, F, and G all scheduled.
