Canada dominated the finals on the second day of the International Canoe Federation Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe World Championships in Germany.

The country claimed both gold medals on offer on the second day of competition at the Sportpark Duisburg.

Veteran athlete Rachel Cohen at 40 years old joined forces with Madeline Schmidt, 13 years younger than her, to clinch the first title of the Championships. 

The pair clocked in after 1min 9.377sec to win the women's unified K2 200 metres title.

They crossed the line with a 2.078 advantage over the German pair of Nina Voll and Isabel Schank.

Voll and Schank's compatriots Leona Johs and Sandra Leyba then joined them in the podium in third place with a time of 1:12.981.

Matthew Casey and Laurent Lavigne completed the golden double for Canada as they prevailed in the men's unified K2 200m final.

The pair posted a time of 1:00.296 to get the better of Germany's Sebastian Girke and Thomas Brockmann by 2.488.

Pieter van Baelen and Robbe Heylen of Belgium prevented another German bronze as they rounded out the top three after 1:03.721.

Max Grumbach and Mathias Neubert missed out on the podium place by 0.475.

Competition is set to continue tomorrow with 15 gold medals due to be won in Duisburg.
