Jamaica produced an upset win overt Italy as England survived a scare from Puerto Rico during the latest playoff fixtures at the World Lacrosse Men's Championship in San Diego.

The Caribbean nation beat seventh seed Italians 7-6 to seal their first quarter-finals appearance.

Khairi Sears was the star attacker with three goals, supported by two crucial strikes from Marcus Minichello.

"It’s an unreal moment," said Sears.

"It’s a blessing and privilege to make history for the kids back home.

"For every player that looks like us, like me, you get emotional thinking about it.

"We’re not done yet but it feels amazing."

Four-goal super star Christian Scarpello helped England to edge Puerto Rico 7-6.

Scarpello scored the winning goal as William Baxter starred between the posts with four crucial saves to ensure a dramatic win.

Japan registered a 9-4 win over Germany to seal their quarter-finals spot.

They will face third seed Haudenosaunee, who beat Hong Kong 13-3.

"We’re really excited for the next round, because our aim is to beat the top three teams," said attacker Kazuki Obana.

"We’ve been preparing to play them throughout the year, so we’re happy to advance.

"Our main concepts are playing solidly, creativity and hustle.

"The creativity was on display as Japan took the lead in the third quarter."

Australia also reached the next round after a commanding 18-7 win over the Netherlands.

Conor McDonough stood out for the Australians with three assists and a goal.

Israel managed to hold on for a narrow 6-5 win over Ireland despite going 5-1 up early in the third quarter.

Ireland scored four to cut the lead to one with three minutes of play remaining.

However, heroics from goalkeeper Andrew Morris, with nine saves, helped them to set up an important game against top seed the United States in the quarter-finals.
