Olympic bobsleigh gold medallist Jean Wicki has died just one week short of his 90th birthday.

The Swiss pilot won the four-man title at the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo, alongside Hans Leutenegger, Werner Camichel and Edy Hubacher.

He also won two-man bronze in the Japanese city with Hubacher, and a four-man medal of the same colour in Grenoble in 1968.

Other honours included European gold in 1968 and eight Swiss titles.

At the 1969 World Championships he crashed while leading on the fourth and final run, leading to nine months in a cast.

Wicki gained a love of speed working in Paris for Formula One team Gordini, as a mechanic and later a test driver.

He took up bobsleigh after Olympic bronze medallist Max Angst had given him a sled to repair and following contact with Angst's brother, Heiri.

Heiri Angst won Olympic gold in 1956.

After his athletic career, Wicki entered sports administration.
