Marlen Reusser claimed a home victory as she won the general classification at the Tour de Suisse Women.

The Team SD Worx rider led going into the fourth and final stage but Poland's Kasia Niewiadoma of Canyon-SRAM launched a 50-kilometre attack to threaten her chances of glory.

Reusser chased on her own as team-mate Niamh Fisher-Black of Australia kept tabs with Niewiadoma to help out her colleague in the general classification race.

Fisher-Black would win a sprint finish to claim the stage, and Reusser clawed back enough time to win overall by more than a minute.

She ended with a time of 7 hours 53min 22sec as Niewiadoma faded to fifth and Dutch rider Demi Vollering, also of Team SD Worx, ended second.

"I am so happy, this was such a big goal of mine," said Reusser after winning her home race.

"I was dreaming of that a little bit, and the team supported me one hundred per cent and really did everything to make this happen, I am super proud, super happy, it’s a dream come true, really."

Reusser, who won time-trial silver at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, admitted to nerves when Niewiadoma made her break.

"It was not a good situation because Kasia was riding full gas in the front, Trek was not helping," she said.

"It was just Demi and me left, and Demi was riding on the front without getting any help, so I thought, the best is to go on the offensive."

The race is part of the International Cycling Union Women's World Tour.

It was a third victory of the season for Reusser who also triumphed at the three-day Itzulia Women in Spain last month, and at the one-day Gent–Wevelgem in Belgium in March.

Vollering is the overall World Tour leader, with the Giro d'Italia Donne the next race on the circuit between June 30 and July 9.
