Japan reigned supreme at the Asian Track Cycling Championships, winning a whopping 27 medals in the Malaysian city of Nilai.

The Japanese team proved far too strong as they topped the medal standings with 14 golds, seven silvers and six bronzes at the Velodrom Nasional Malaysia.

Olympic silver medallist Yumi Kajihara was the star of the show, claiming four golds courtesy of her successes in the women’s scratch, omnium, madison and team pursuit.

Tsuyaka Uchino finished with a golden hat-trick including winning the women’s elimination crown before linking up with Kajihara to achieve team pursuit and madison success.

Riyu Ota topped a Japanese one-two-three in the women’s sprint final, while Japan also swept the podium in the women’s keirin with Mina Sato emerging victorious.

China also underlined their strength in women’s track cycling with four golds, including one in the team sprint.

Jian Yulu triumphed in the women’s 500 metres time-trial, Wei Suwan came out on top in the women’s individual pursuit and Liu Jiali climbed atop the podium after winning the women’s points race.

Eiya Hashimoto and Kazushige Kuboki delivered three golds each for Japan in the men’s competition.

There was double individual delight for Hashimoto as he won both the men’s elimination and omnium races before helping Japan capture the men’s team pursuit crown.

Kuboki was also part of the gold medal-winning team while earning the individual pursuit and madison titles along with Shunsuke Imamura.

Naoki Kojimo won the points race before playing a role in Japan’s team pursuit success, while Kaiya Ota, Yuta Obara and Yoshitaku Nagasako joined forces to win men’s team sprint gold.

There was joy for hosts Malaysia as Azizulhasni Awang won the men’s sprint and keirin titles and Fadhil Zonis clinched the men’s one kilometre time-trial crown.

Iran’s Mohammad Ganjhanloo was the other gold medallist after overcoming Japan’s Imamura to seal the men’s scratch title.
