Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) has joined forces with Tshwane University as part of a research project designed to help further the organisation's understanding of esports.

MSSA is set to work alongside Dr Rosa Naudé-Potgieter from the Tshwane University Department of Tourism Management with the aim of understanding participants in esports, as well as their motivations and behaviour.

"We are truly looking forward to the results of these unique studies as it can guide the tourism industry on what improvements can be made to hopefully capture this market and reap the economic benefits," said Dr Naudé-Potgieter.

Sub-research topics are set to include the motivation and needs of esports players and spectators, and the travel behaviours and economic spending of participants.

MSSA President Colin Webster added: "The results will further clarify the esports landscape which will benefit all involved whether they be sponsors, spectators, and/or athletes."

MSSA is an affiliate of the International Esports Federation, and is responsible for the governance and promotion of esports as well as other gaming forms, including historical figure games, board games, card games and robotics.
