Five different nations earned gold medals on the first day of the International Judo Federation (IJF) Grand Slam in Uzbekistan's capital Tashkent, but the hosts were denied by Nurali Emomali of Tajikistan.

World junior champion Emomali faced home favourite Sardor Nurillaev in the men's under-66 kilograms final, and took gold in a bout which went to golden score at the Yunusobod Sport Complex.

Walide Khyar of France beat Willian Lima of Brazil in the first battle for bronze, and Mukhriddin Tilovov provided another medal for Uzbekistan against Maxime Gobert of France.

The other men's competition was at under-60kg, with Kim Won-jin of South Korea making short work of Kazakhstan's Nurkanat Serikbayev.

Ahmad Yusifov of Azerbaijan and Doston Ruziev of Uzbekistan took the two bronze medals with victories against Georgia's former world champion Lukhumi Chkhvimiani and France's Romaric Wend Yam Bouda respectively.

Serbia's Andrea Stojadinov triumphed in the women's under-48kg, beating Portugal's Catarina Costa in golden score to earn her first victory on the IJF World Tour.

Tuğçe Beder of Turkey took third place with victory against Spain's Laura Martínez Abelenda, and Guo Zongying won the all-Chinese bronze medal match against Zhuang Wenna.

The women's under-52kg title went to Germany's Mascha Ballhaus with an impressive win in the final against two-time world champion Ai Shishime of Japan.

Hungary's Réka Pupp and Spain's Ana Pérez Box were the bronze medallists with victories against Portugal's Maria Siderot and China's Liu Yingwei respectively.

Momo Tamaoki of Japan was the day's other winner in the women's under-57kg against Georgia's Eteri Liparteliani in the final.

Japan's Akari Omori beat Veronica Toniolo of Italy to bronze, and Germany's Pauline Starke overcame Chinese Taipei's Lien Chen-ling.

The second of three days of competition is due to be held tomorrow in Tashkent with the women's under-63kg and under-70kg and the men's under-73kg and under-81kg.
