Spain's Oriol Cardona Coll and Ana Alonso Rodriguez combined to claim gold in the mixed relay race at the International Ski Mountaineering Federation (ISMF) World Cup in Val Martello in Italy.

The pair built a healthy lead in the first-half of the race and then controlled from the front before crossing the line with a time of 38min 38sec.

"I had a small gap before the last lap, but you never know what can happen, so I pushed till the finish," Alonso Rodriguez said.

"We will do the World Champs at home together, so we are very motivated for the mixed relay.

"Today's race also gave us confidence."

The result marked Alonso Rodriguez's first World Cup win with the pair now cementing their status as favourites for the upcoming World Championships on home snow in Boí Taüll, scheduled to take place from February 27 to March 5.

"I know that with Oriol, we are a super team," she said.

"I felt strong and had a good battle with Emily.

"In the second lap, I could keep a tiny gap for Oriol.

"It's my first victory, I'm so happy.

"Great for our confidence before the home World Championships."

France's Emily Harrop won the mixed relay with Thibault Anselmet at Val Thorens earlier in the season but he skipped today's race so she was accompanied by Robin Galindo.

The pair finished second after 39:09 to seal Galindo's first senior podium finish.

"It's incredible to race with Emily, she is so strong," Galindo said.

"I was not the strongest man today because Oriol is just top on this course, but she helped me a lot.

"The first podium feels great, it gives me confidence for tomorrow's race and the rest of the season."

Caroline Ulrich and Matteo Favre of Switzerland took third place with 39:35 on the clock.

"It was a tough race," Ulrich said.

"In the beginning, I felt good but lost time on transitions because of an arm injury, so it was not easy.

"But, in general, it was a good race with Mathieu.

"We are happy to finish on the podium."
