Despite continuous rain at the ice track, the Latvian team dominated proceedings to finish in 2min 13.143sec and earn the fifth relay World Cup victory for their country.

Elina Ieva Vitola - who had earlier taken bronze behind individual women's winner Anna Berreiter of Germany - Kristers Aparjods and the double of Martins Bots/Roberts Plume also won the third European Championship gold in relay history for Latvia.

Second place went to the German team with Anna Berreiter, Max Langenhan and Tobias Wendl/Tobias Arlt, 0.367sec adrift of the hosts, ahead of Italy with Sandra Robatscher, Dominik Fischnaller and Emanel Rieder/Simon Kainzwaldner at +0.774.

The relay teams from Ukraine, Slovakia and China finished fourth to sixth.

"To finish with gold again here at home in front of our audience is the most beautiful thing that could happen to us as a team," the 22-year-old Vitola, who was 18th at the Beijing 2022 Winter Games, told FIL.

Team-mate Aparjods said the result was an ideal preparation for the upcoming World Championships with this victory.

"The races here have shown that we are well prepared," he said.

"I am looking forward to the track in Oberhof because it is very similar to Sigulda in some sections.

"I know that I can be fast and for us as a team it would of course be a dream if we could beat the German team again on a German track."

Earlier in a competition that doubled as the 2023 European Championships, Berreiter earned her double title win by finishing seventh and second in the respective first and second runs for a total time of 1min 24.600sec.

That gave her a 0.031 margin over compatriot Dajana Eitberger, with Vitola just 0.006sec further back.

Vitola's team-mate Kendija Aparjode had led at halfway, but 12th place in the second run left her in seventh place.
