Skate Canada has become the latest national governing body to join the Abuse-Free Sport initiative which aims to address mistreatment in sport.

The programme launched earlier this year after multiple reports of abuse in Canadian sport, having been developed by the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada.

The national governing body for figure skating is set to join on Saturday (December 31), a move welcomed by chief executive Debra Armstrong.

"Our dedication to a safe environment is a top priority and we are proud to be taking another step towards protecting the skating community through the Abuse-Free Sport," Armstrong said.

"We are pleased to see Abuse-Free Sport fully operational, with the expertise and capacity to support the sporting system."

Under the agreement, Abuse-Free Sport is set to handle all misconduct complaints from Skate Canada's national team and NextGen programmes, and be the reporting system used for the Board of Directors and international officials.

Other members and registrants of Skate Canada are set to continue having misconduct matters managed by Skate-Safe, a reporting system operated by third-party provider Integrity Counts.

This platform remains open to all until the move to Abuse-Free Sport.

Skate Canada has previously updated its policies and procedures through the National Safe Sport Programme in September 2020, including the adoption of the Universal Code of Conduct to Prevent and Address Maltreatment in Sport.

Taekwondo Canada, Hockey Canada, Rowing Canada Aviron and Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton are among the other governing bodies who have joined Abuse-Free Sport.

The Canadian Olympic Committee agreed a partnership with Abuse-Free Sport in September.
