A taskforce under the guidance of the Solomon Islands Government Services Integration Committee (GSIC) has been formed for the official launch of the Safe and Green Games initiative in February, as part of the upcoming 2023 Pacific Games preparations.

The GSIC met for the first time together on Friday (December 9) to discuss the plan of the launch.

This action plan focuses on environmentalism for the Games.

Another meeting is planned next week according to GSIC chair and Planning and Task Force Committee chair Bernard Bataanisia.

"We are looking at a three-day event for the launch, with different activities, and once a draft programme is finalised, we will then forward to the Government for consideration and approval, and after we can release the information and programme to the public," said Bataanisia in a statement from the Solomon Islands Government.

"Basically, the purpose of the launch would be to provide a safe and secure environment supporting the Government successfully host the Pacific Games 2023, and secondly, to beautify and clean up the city environment for the Games, and hence leave a long-term legacy for the country."

Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare said in November at the one-year-to-go event for the Pacific Games that the Safe and Green Games would be launched in February 2023.

The Pacific Games is scheduled to take place from November 19 to December 2.
