Morocco beat Portugal 1-0 in the first match of the day to become the first African side to reach the World Cup semi-finals, before holders France overcame England 2-1.

The French authorities announced plans to deploy more than 1,200 officers in Paris on the day prior.

Around 20,000 fans gathered on the Champs-Élysées to celebrate Moroccan and French victories.

Le Parisien reported that 74 people were arrested for throwing "projectiles and fireworks at the police".

Video footage showed fans clashing with police and smashing shop windows.

The police also reportedly beat fans after they fell to the floor, and used tear gas against the crowd.

French police came under scrutiny during the UEFA Champions League Final at the Stade de France in May, when they were widely criticised for their handling of the match including the indiscriminate use of pepper spray on supporters.

A French Senate report published in July included recommendations for the Ministry of the Interior to prevent "the exposure of people who do not present an immediate danger" to tear gas, and for the state and the French Football Federation to "change the way public authorities look on the supporters".

Security has since become a key area of focus and scrutiny in the build-up to the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics.

Last night also featured celebrations from Morocco fans in Belgium's capital Brussels, where an initially festive atmosphere was reported by La Dernière Heure before around 10 arrests were made and tear gas fired in response to clashes between supporters and the police.

Morocco are due to face France in the semi-finals on Wednesday (December 14), and Le Parisien reports that French police are expected to be mobilised again.
