One of the new venues for the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics, the Porte de La Chapelle Arena, is expected to be completed around three months behind schedule at the end of 2023.

The venue is set to accommodate 6,700 spectators for badminton and Para badminton competitions, and 7,000 when it stages rhythmic gymnastics and Para weightlifting at Paris 2024.

Construction on the Arena began in the summer of 2021.

It had initially been due for completion in the summer of 2023, but Le Parisien reported that this had been pushed backed to the end of 2023 with a view to opening in January 2024.

The delay is not expected to impact the schedule for Paris 2024.

It had, however, been due to become the home of the Paris Basketball club after opening, and the delay could also affect test events set to be staged at the Arena.

COVID-19, supply issues related to the war in Ukraine and inflation are among the factors which have been blamed for the delay.

The Arena is set to expand to a capacity of around 8,000 after Paris 2024, and organisers say it meets the City of Paris' hopes to have a venue capable of staging major sporting events in the Porte de la Chapelle district.

It is also hoped that two gymnasiums adjoining the Arena can be put to community use, and cultural events, concerts and Congresses can be held on the site.
