Meanwhile, hosts Bosnia and Herzegovina won their third successive game in Pool A as they overcame Japan 25-8, 25-14, 25-15 at the Hotel Hills Arena in Sarajevo.

Elsewhere in Pool A the United States overcame Serbia 25-17, 25-22, 25-13 while the day’s other Pool B contest saw Kazakhstan beat Iraq 25-13, 25-17, 25-19.

Brazil topped Pool C courtesy of a 25-23, 25-14, 25-9 win over Canada, while the other group game saw Germany beat Poland 25-18, 25-16, 25-19.

Egypt finished Pool D unbeaten and top of the standings thanks to a 25-19, 25-15, 25-12 win over Rwanda.

The pool’s other match saw Ukraine overcome The Netherlands 25-18, 25-17, 25-15.

Following the conclusion of the initial pool stage, a cross-pool round of games is scheduled for tomorrow, to determine which teams will go to the quarter-finals, with the remainder then playing a series of classification matches to determine the remaining places.

In the women’s competition, three-time runners-up the United States were involved in a thrilling five-set encounter with neighbours Canada, with the US coming out on top 22-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-12, 15-7 in the Pool B fixture.

Later in the day, Canada were in action again, winning 25-10, 25-14, 23-25, 25-13 against Iran.

In Pool A, Ukraine registered two wins today to sit top of the pool, overcoming Poland 25-8, 25-18, 25-12 and then hosts Bosnia and Herzegovina 25-2, 25-9, 25-11.

The pool’s other match saw Poland overcome Hungary 25-21, 25-18, 25-12.

In the day’s Pool C matches Brazil beat Italy 25-17, 23-25, 25-12, 25-21, before Italy overcame Germany 25-18, 17-25, 25-12, 25-19.

The final day of pool play in the women’s competition is due to take place tomorrow.
