The 17-year-old is still the only skater in history to successfully land the jump, having first done so last month at the US International Figure Skating Classic in Lake Placid, and became the first to do so at Skate America too.

Performing to Euphoria by Labrinth, Malinin opened with the quadruple axel before amounting more points later in his routine with a triple lutz/triple axel combination to finish with a score of 194.29 points - with an event total of 280.37.

He was in a world of his own, overshadowing the achievements of Miura whose 178.23 score for a total of 273.19, still put the Japanese skater far in front of the rest of the field.

After posting a similar short programme score to Miura, Cha was then similarly close to Grassl in the free skate, with their scores respectively 169.61 and 169.25.

However, the South Korean took bronze due to his superior short score, finishing on a total of 264.05 to Grassl's 257.68.

Roman Sadovsky from Canada was a distant fifth with a total of 225.41.

There was more success for the United States in the pairs competition, as Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier finished top of the free skate.

Performing their new routine to Sign of the Times by Harry Styles, the Americans had enough to again edge out the Canadian duo of Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps, finishing with a free score of 126.20 for a total of 201.39.

Stellato-Dudek and Deschamps finished on a total of 197.89 after scoring 124.84 in this segment.

Kelly Ann Laurin and Loucas Éthier ensured a second Canadian couple made the podium as they finished far off the top two with a total of 156.94.

Olympic bronze medallist Kaori Sakamoto leads the women's event after the short programme, having scored 71.72 to lead Isabeau Levito of the US by a narrow margin.

The American is second on 71.30, followed by her compatriot Amber Glenn in third on 68.42.

The women's event coincides with the ongoing controversy over Russian skater Kamila Valieva's doping verdict, which the Russian Anti-Doping Agency wishes to keep confidential, against the expectations of the World Anti-Doping Agency.
