There are growing fears that the facilities needed to stage the Games, which are due to take place between October 3 and 14 in 2010, and will feature 5,500 athletes from 71 countries will not be ready in time.

 

But a spokesman for the New Delhi Government said that for the next year they will checking daily on more than 100 projects to ensure that the country was not embarrassed.

 

He said: "We are now constantly monitoring the progress of 120 infrastructure projects so as to complete them by April next year.

 

"We are doing it silently.

 

"Everything will be ready well ahead of time.

 

"There is no need for any concern."
 

A Parliamentary report last month found there were serious grounds for concern over whether facilities, ranging from stadiums to road improvements, would be ready.

 

The Hindustan Times, one of India's leading newspapers, claimed it would need "a miracle" for New Delhi to be ready to stage the Games, which is seen as a dress rehearshal for a bid to host the 2020 Olympics.

 

There are also concerns over lack of accommodation for foreign visitors and security fears.

 

The spokesman said: "An alternative plan has been worked out with the Haryana Government to sort out the problem of accommodation for the visitors.

 

"We are certainly concerned about security after the Mumbai attacks.

 

"A security plan is being developed after taking into considerations inputs of various security agencies."
