Dutch cyclist Lorena Wiebes won the fifth stage of the Tour de France Femmes as her compatriot Marianne Vos retained the overall race lead.

Victory saw Wiebes win a second stage of this year’s race, after her triumph on the opening day in Paris, as she took a sprint finish on the 175.6 kilometre flat stage five finishing in Saint-Die-des-Voges.

A dramatic finish saw Italian Elisa Longo Borghini of Trek-Segafredo take a wrong turn with 500 metres to go, as she went down a deviation reserved for race vehicles.

Longo Borghini was due to lead out teammate and compatriot Elisa Balsamo in the sprint, with Balsamo’s finish slightly damaged by her compatriot’s wrong turn.

This allowed Wiebes, riding for Team DSM, to take victory in 4hrs 32min 16sec, with Balsamo in second place and overall race leader Vos of Jumbo-Visma in third place.

Vos maintains her lead in the overall standings in a time of 16hrs 20min 58secs, with Silvia Persico of Italy of Valcar Travel & Service in second and Poland’s Katarzyna Niewiadoma, representing Canyon-SRAM in third overall.

The stage also saw a large crash in the peloton with 45 kilometres to go, with Emma Norsgaard of Denmark, representing Movistar, forced to abandon, with a shoulder injury.

The sixth stage of the race is due to take place tomorrow, over a 128.6km hilly route from Saint-Die-Des-Voges to Rosheim, with the race itself due to conclude on Sunday (July 31).
