Six-time champion O'Sullivan was a cut above John Higgins, winning their semi-final 17-11, but Trump's last-four match went to the final frame.

Welshman Mark Williams had trailed Trump 7-1 and 12-5 in the first-to-17-frames semi-final, but staged a remarkable comeback at Sheffield's Crucible Theatre.

Williams even took a 16-15 lead and was one frame from victory, but could not close the deal.

As Trump's sealed a 17-16 win, Williams was left to take scant consolation from the fact he had tied the record for the most centuries posted at a single World Championship - 16.

Trump won the world title in 2019 and this year all four semi-finalists were past champions for the first time.

After the other semi-final, Scotland's Higgins conceded that O'Sullivan "was far too good for me".

O'Sullivan is now seeking a a record-equalling seventh world title.

Only Scot Stephen Hendry has won that many in the modern era.

The two-day final is due to begin tomorrow.
