Canada’s Les Suprêmes have won their first World Synchronized Skating Championship title after producing a phenomenal free skating performance to topple overnight leaders Helsinki Rockettes in Hamilton.

Les Suprêmes had never finished higher than fifth at the competition previously, while it is Canada’s third world title following Team Nexxice’s triumphs in 2009 and 2015.

Five-time world champions Marigold Ice Unity and three-time winners Helsinki Rockettes, who were both representing Finland, claimed silver and bronze at FirstOntario Centre.

After finishing second in the short programme yesterday, Les Suprêmes skated to Four Seasons, The White Crow and Lacrimosa as they put together a sequence of difficult elements and unique patterns.

Their efforts were rewarded with a level four for their pair element - a death spiral - move element, twizzles, group lift and no-hold element, and a level three for their intersections.

This gave Les Suprêmes a score of 154.80 points and an overall total of 236.31.

"We felt amazing on the ice we couldn’t be more proud," team captain Laurie Desilets said.

"We really enjoyed ourselves on the ice tonight.

"It was so much fun to skate, a beautiful programme and we did it like we always do in practice."

Marigold Icy Unity were handed 151.24 points for their performance which consisted of five level-four elements to bring their overall total to 228.72 points.

They had skated to Unstoppable, One Last Shot and Trapped In Time.

Helsinki Rockettes’ lost their leading position after a damaging mistake during their no-hold element.

Following a level four group lift and twizzle element, two skaters went down which caused an otherwise good performance to be reduced to 143.44 points - a score to put them fifth in the event.

They finished with an overall points tally of 226.20.

Nexxice finished fourth in the standings on 224.38 points while The Haydenettes of the United States completed the top five after totalling 212.99 points.

Team Miami University fell from fifth to sixth after scoring 204.90 points.
