Bulgaria's Boryana Kaleyn took the lead on home soil with a total score of 64.100 after the first day of qualification at the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup series in Sofia.

Kaleyn, who was participating in her first international competition since since last year’s World Championships in Kitakyushu in Japan, scored 32.950 in the hoop segment before adding 31.150 in the ball qualification.

Italian Sofia Raffaeli finished second with 62.050.

Raffaeli managed 31.300 in the hoop segment and 30.750 in the ball category.

Kaleyn's compatriot Stiliana Nikolova was the third best with a score of 59.650.

Nikolova is the daughter of former professional football player Ilia Dyakov and Paulina Nikolova, a rhythmic group gymnast who won gold for Bulgaria at the World Championships in 1985.

Making her World Cup debut in front of a home crowd, Nikolova managed to get 32.000 in hoop before attaining a 27.650 in the ball segment.

Hungarian Evelin Viktoria Kocsis's 59.550 was enough to secure a slim advantage over fifth-placed Italian Milena Baldassarri's 59.350.

Baldassarri, who won silver at the 2018 World Championships at the same venue, scored 29.300 and 30.050 in hoop and ball, respectively.

The 15-year-old Kocsis from Budapest despite scoring only 29.700 in the ball segment, managed to finish fourth in the qualification after a score of 29.850 in the hoop earlier.

Competition in Sofia is due to continue tomorrow with clubs and ribbon qualification before concluding on Sunday (April 10).
