Chungcheong's bid to host the 2027 International University Sports Federation (FISU) Summer World University Games could "provide a growth momentum boost" to the South Korean region, the Governor of South Chungcheong Province Yang Seung-jo has claimed.

The proposal incorporates the cities of Daejeon and Sejong, and the provinces of Chungbuk and Chungnam, which are also referred to as North and South Chungcheong respectively.

Government officials from the four local administrations serve on the Chungcheong Megacity Bid Committee (CMBC).

The Korea Herald reported that the Games could be worth KRW 2.7 trillion (£1.7 billion/$2.3 billion/€2 billion) and create 10,000 news jobs in the Chungcheong region, and Yang was positive about the potential benefits to the region of staging the multi-sport event.

"The Chungcheong region’s hosting of the international sport event could provide a growth momentum to the region," said Yang, as reported by The Korea Herald.

The CMBC is preparing for the next stage of the bidding process, which is expected to feature a series of meetings with FISU up until August to investigate technical matters and complete the bid dossier.

An on-site evaluation by the FISU Executive Committee is then planned for September.

Chungcheong is one of two bids confirmed by FISU for the 2027 Summer World University Games, the other being North Carolina in the United States, which includes the triangle and triad regions.

A decision is expected to be made at a FISU Executive Committee meeting in Yekaterinburg in Russia on October 9 this year.

The CMBC has asked residents in the region to support its bid, with a campaign seeking one million signatures already launched.

Promotion groups have also been launched in four cities and provinces in Chungcheong, while four volunteer service centres and 66 universities have agreed to support the bid.

South Korea has previously hosted the event, when it was known as the Summer Universiade, in Daegu in 2013 and Gwangju in 2015.

The US, meanwhile, last staged the 1993 Summer edition in Buffalo.

Lake Placid is due to host the 2023 FISU Winter World University Games.

Chengdu in China is scheduled to host the delayed 2021 FISU Summer World University Games from June 26 until July 7 this year, with future events planned in Yekaterinburg in 2023 and Germany's Rhine-Ruhr region in 2025.
