Commonwealth Games Wales (CGW) has appointed professional rugby player Ashton Hewitt and former Welsh netball athlete Anna Stembridge as non-executive directors to its Board in preparation for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Hewitt, who plays for regional team the Newport Dragons, has a degree in criminology, criminal justice and youth justice, as well as a Masters in human resource management.

He made his professional debut in rugby at the age of 17.

The 27-year-old said he is now looking to help Wales succeed at the Games next year.

"I am delighted to have been appointed and have the opportunity to be part of Commonwealth Games Wales," said Hewitt.

"It's a new experience for me, which leaves me excited to get started and contribute as best I can to the team and build on its legacy moving forward."

Stembridge has over 25 years competing and working in high-performance environments as a former two-time Commonwealth Games and World Cup netball player.

She was also a coach for the England team.

Stembridge said she was passionate about the development of women in sport, inclusion and diversity.

"I am absolutely delighted to be appointed a member of the CGW Board," said Stembridge.

"What an honour to be part of a team that has done some amazing work over the last couple of cycles and holds such bold aspirations for the future.

"To be led by such a transformational leader in [CWG chair] Helen Phillips and to work with such a great team is a real privilege, and one which I am very excited about."

Wales had its best Games to date at Gold Coast 2018 with 10 golds, 12 silvers and 14 bronzes, beating the previous record set at Auckland 1990.

The country is 10th on the all-time medal table for the Games.

The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games are scheduled to take place from July 28 to August 8 2022.
