French footballer Karim Benzema has been found guilty of conspiring to blackmail his former national team team-mate, Mathieu Valbuena, over a sex tape at a training camp.

The Real Madrid striker, who is regarded as one of the best in the world in his position, was handed a one-year suspended jail term and given a €75,000 (£63,000; $84,000) fine.

The 33-year-old was one of five on trial last month over an attempt to extort the Olympiacos midfielder over the incident dating back to June 2015.

Benzema had put pressure on the 37-year-old to pay off the blackmailers, who had conspired with them to act as an intermediary.

He denied the allegations against him, saying he was trying to get rid of the video.

Neither player was in court for the trial in Versailles, and Benzema is expected to play for his club side against Moldova's FC Sheriff Tiraspol in the Champions League tonight.

Valbuena received several phone calls threatening to expose the tape in June 2015, which left him fearing for his career and his spot on the French team.

Due to the scandal, both players lost their positions in the French squad, who were finalists at Euro 2016 and winners of the 2018 World Cup without the pair.

Valbuena's international career ended with the scandal, finishing with 52 caps and eight goals, while Benzema returned to the squad in May of this year as part of the Euro 2020 team that were knocked out on penalties by Switzerland in the round-of-16.

He scored two braces against Portugal and Switzerland respectively to finish with the third-highest goal tally of four goals.

In 2016, Benzema blamed then-manager of the national team Didier Deschamps of folding "due to pressure from France's racist element" in an interview with Marca over his exclusion from the Euro 2016 squad, less than a year after the scandal.

To date, he has 94 caps and 36 goals for France.
