Men’s and women’s number one seeds Marwan ElShorbagy and Hania El Hammamy won their second round matches at the Professional Squash Association Manchester Open, as the top eight seeded players entered the competition.

The final match of the day at the National Squash Centre in Manchester saw Egyptian ElShorbagy triumph 11-8, 11-6, 12-10 against England’s George Parker.

The big shock in the men’s draw saw second seed Karim Abdel Gawad of Egypt defeated by compatriot Youssef Ibrahim 15-13, 11-3, 11-9, with the world number 18 claiming only his second ever win against a top ten player.

Men’s third seed Diego Elias had to come from a game down to overcome England’s Patrick Rooney, with the player from Peru winning 10-12, 11-6, 11-8, 11-8.

Fourth seed Joel Makin of Wales also recovered from losing the first game to defeat England’s Adrian Waller 9-11, 11-5, 11-7, 11-5.

The other men’s seed to be eliminated today was fifth seeded Miguel Rodriguez of Colombia who was beaten 11-9, 1-11, 11-8, 11-7 by world number 38 Abdulla Mohd Al Tamimi of Qatar.

In the women’s draw, top seed El Hammamy of Egypt triumphed in straight games 11-5, 11-7, 11-4 against Malaysia’s Rachel Arnold.

Second seed Sarah-Jane Perry made rapid progress against Yasmine Hutton in an all English clash, with Perry winning 11-6, 11-5, 11-3 in just 25 minutes.

Third seed Tesni Evans of Wales was also a straight games winner as she beat Lisa Aitken of Scotland 11-8, 11-7, 11-8.

The highest women’s seed to crash out on the second day of the tournament was fourth seeded Joshna Chinappa of India, who was beaten 8-11, 11-5, 5-11, 11-9, 11-5 in just under an hour by France’s Coline Aumard, who claimed an emotional victory after missing eight months due to a foot injury.

The other women’s seeds defeated today were fifth seeded Rowan Elaraby of Egypt, who lost 11-7, 11-7, 11-3 to Sivasangari Subramaniam of Malaysia and eighth seed Nadine Shahin of Egypt, who was beaten 11-9, 11-13, 11-4, 11-4 by Wales Emily Whitlock, the world number 23.
