Russian rower Hanna Prakatsen claimed the silver medal in the women’s single sculls discipline at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Prakatsen, 28, the reigning European champion, claimed silver in a time of 7min 17.39sec, with her medal coming a day after compatriots Vasilisa Stepanova and Elena Oriabinskaia earned silver in the women’s pair.

Prakatsen is the first Russian since 1980 to win an Olympic medal in the single sculls discipline, when the feat was achieved by Antonina Makhina.

Prakatsen only transferred to the single sculls discipline this year and claimed some impressive results in the build-up to Tokyo 2020, winning single sculls gold at the European Championships in Varese, Italy and at the World Cup regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland.

Before transferring to the single sculls, Prakatsen competed in the fours discipline for Russia.

Prakatsen, who took up the sport in 2005, only began competing for Russia in 2019, having previously represented Belarus until 2016 before changing her international allegiance.
