Hangzhou in China has been awarded the 2022 Sitting Volleyball World Championships.

The event at the World ParaVolley Hangzhou Development Centre has been tentatively scheduled to run from May 18 to 24 in 2022.

World ParaVolley said China was one of seven countries to express an interest in hosting the tournament.

"Congratulations and appreciation to China for their support of our most important event on the sitting volleyball calendar," said World ParaVolley President Barry Couzner.

China will become the 10th country to host the Championships, World ParaVolley's flagship event outside of the Paralympic Games.

The Netherlands, Slovenia, Norway, the United States, Egypt, Germany, Hungary, Poland and Iran have also staged the competition.

"We really appreciate that the board of World ParaVolley has granted China the right to host the 2022 Sitting Volleyball World Championships," said Chinese Paralympic Committee secretary general Zhao Sujing.

"We will do our best to make sure that all athletes have a wonderful experience during their stay in China, and will cooperate closely with World ParaVolley to make these Championships successful as our commitment."

World ParaVolley is planning to organise two final qualifiers for the event - one for men and one for women - where the last places on offer at the tournament will be claimed.

The organisation has invited countries to apply to host the qualifiers.

The qualification process for the event is due to be confirmed in the near future.

Hangzhou is scheduled to host the Asian Games in September 2022.
