The Organising Committee for the 2022 World University Championship Orienteering has been formed, while a logo has been unveiled for the event.

Switzerland is due to host the action in Biel/Bienne and Oberaargau with student athletes from more than 30 countries expected to compete.

Dates of between August 17 and 21 have been set in 2022 and there will be five medal competitions on the programme.

Swiss National Championships in middle-distance and relay will be merged into the event.

Leonz Eder, the first vice-president of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and the managing director of Swiss University Sports, addressed an online meeting about the Championship.

He thanked the Organising Committee's event director Fritz Aebi and technical director Jost Hammer.

"Switzerland is one of the world's leading nations in orienteering, and Swiss University Sports has also always been very successful in the World University Championships by winning lots of medals," said Eder.

"This is why the motivation for Swiss athletes to once again do well in title competitions at home is very high.

"Switzerland has hosted two World University Championships, in 1980 in St. Gallen and in 1994 in Fiesch.

"Moreover, at the Lucerne 2021 Winter Universiade next December, ski orienteering is on the programme in Lenzerheide.

"Then, the 2022 World University Championship will be followed by the European Universities Championship 2023 in St. Gallen.

"I am particularly pleased that thanks to the good cooperation between Swiss University Sports, Swiss Orienteering and FISU as well as the European University Sports Association, important title competitions will once again take place in Switzerland, which is also the headquarter seat of FISU."

The coronavirus crisis has severely impacted Swiss university sports, most notably pushing the 2021 Winter Universiade in Lucerne from February to December.
