South Korea's An Se-young upset top seed Michelle Li to reach the semi-finals of the women's singles event at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Canada Open in Calgary.

The fifth seed recovered from dropping the second game as she dominated the third in a 21-15, 19-21, 21-3 victory at Markin MacPhail Centre in this BWF Super Series 100 event.

An is scheduled tol take on Fabienne Deprez for a place in the final after the German beat eighth seed Porntip Buranaprasertsuk of Thailand 21-16, 21-18.

There is the potential for an all-South Korean final as Kim Hyo-min will play Wang Zhi Yi of China in the second last four encounter.

Kim fought back from a game down to overcome Japan's Ayumi Mine 16-21, 21-18, 21-12, while Wang defeated Mine's team-mate Natsuki Oie.

In the men's singles, Chinese Taipei's fourth seed Wang Tzu-Wei, the highest-ranked player left in the competition, defeated Heo Kwang-hee of South Korea 21-12, 21-11 to reach the last four.

His opponent will be Parupalli Kashyap of India, who needed three games to get past Frenchman Lucas Claerbout 12-21, 23-21, 24-22 in a marathon contest.

Two unseeded players - Japan's Koki Watanabe and Li Shi Feng of China - will contest the other semi-final.

Watanabe proved too strong for fifth seed Rajiv Ouseph of England with a 21-17, 21-19 win, while Li beat Sourabh Verma of India 21-15, 21-11.

The tournament is due to continue tomorrow.
