Mexico's Ariadna Gutiérrez triumphed in the women's road race as action resumed at the Pan American Road Cycling Championships in Pachuca.

The 27-year-old claimed the gold medal for the host nation in a time of 2 hours 40min 12sec for the 88.2 kilometres course.

Gutiérrez, who rides for the Swapit–Agolico team, crossed the line over a minute in front of her nearest challenger, Chile's Denisse Ahumada.

Ahumada took the silver medal in 2:41:49 ahead of Trinidad and Tobago's Teniel Campbell, who earned the bronze in 2:43:40.

Cuba's defending champion Arlenis Sierra finished outside of the medals, finishing fourth.

Gutiérrez had attacked early but was briefly begged back by riders from Colombia, Chile and Cuba desperately trying to prevent the Mexican from establishing a race-winning advantage.

But their efforts were in vain as Gutiérrez went again and was alone on the finishing straight, crossing in first place to secure the continental crown.

The event is due to continue tomorrow.
