Canada's Raphael Gagne and United States’ Kate Courtney earned gold medals at the Pan American Mountain Bike Championships in Aguascalientes.

Courtney, the reigning world champion, was the clear favourite to triumph in the women’s event in the Mexican city.

The 23-year-old produced a dominant performance as she led the race from start to finish to earn the continental title.

Courtney completed the event in a winning time of 1 hour 22 min 30 sec.

Erin Huck ensured an American one-two as she crossed the line 76 seconds behind her team-mate to secure the silver medal.

The bronze medal was earned by home favourite Daniela Campuzano as the Mexican rider ended three minutes off the winner’s time.

The men’s event saw Gagne emerge as the winner in a time of 1:25:48.

"Definitely over the moon with this win," he said.

Gadne added: "I came second, nine seconds from winning, in 2013 and one minute from winning in 2014 with bronze.

"Today I finally got it.

"I'd like to thank the Canadian national team for supporting me here and at some of the key races this season when I need it the most.

"It's a tough situation now with no team, and the Québec team is there to help me at some races too.

"I am really happy I could make it happen for myself, but I am more thankful to those that are helping me right now."

Gagne enjoyed a winning margin of 16 seconds over Mexico’s Jose Gerardo Ulloa Arevalo, the silver medallist.

The podium was completed by Colombia’s Fabio Castañeda, 73 seconds behind Gagne.
