Russia's Maria Tolokonina won gold in the women's speed final at the International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA) Ice Climbing World Cup in Denver but lost out on the overall title. 

Tolokonina triumphed in today's final with a total speed of 24.28sec, faster than her opponent Jary Coralie of France. 

France's Thomas Marion won the third place race in 28.72, defeating opponent Vivien Labarile of Switzerland. 

Despite Tolokonina's victory, she finished five points behind her compatriot Ekaterina Koshcheeva in the speed standings to lose out on the overall title. 

Koshcheeva, who is absent from Denver, finished first with 380 points, while Tolokina has 375 and fellow Russian Natalia Savitskaia came third with 326.

The same situation occurred in the men's final, with Russia's Nikolai Kuzovlev winning today's event but finishing second in the standings.

Kuzovlev won in 17.39, beating Canada's David Bouffard.

Dmitriy Grebennikov of Russia took third place after defeating Nikolay Primerov of Switzerland with a time of 28.60. 

Another absent climber, Anton Nemov of Russia, took the overall title with 455 points. 

Kuzovlev was second with 365 points, while Vladislav Iurlov finished third with 361 points. 

The competition in the American city continues tomorrow with the lead semis and final. 

Kuzovlev has already guaranteed the men's title in that event, with a lead of 153 points.
