An Olympic Values Education Programme (OVEP) is set to be rolled out in schools across Portugal, the National Olympic Committee of Portugal (COP) has announced.

The COP confirmed the contents of the programme, part of an International Olympic Committee (IOC) scheme, had been approved.

It came after a "long process of analysis and evaluation" of the initiative before it was given the green light by the Directorate-General for Education and Culture, part of the European Commission.

Following the approval, the OVEP will be implemented into schools in Portugal, which uses the context of Olympic sports and the core principles of Olympism.

The OVEP contains a series of free and accessible teaching resources created by the IOC.

Participants are encouraged to experience values-based learning and to assume the responsibilities of good citizenship.

It aims to communicate the benefit of sport and physical activity through an understanding of Olympism and its impact on individual health, enjoyment, and social interaction.

The COP are the latest National Olympic Committee to roll out the OVEP.

It is also present in schools in countries such as Papua New Guinea and Cambodia.
