Japanese men and Chinese women have dominated qualifying today at the first International Ski Federation Snowboard Halfpipe World Cup to take place in China for almost seven years.

Liu Jiayu excelled on home snow at the Secret Garden superpipe close to Beijing to lead women's qualifying in a competition taking place in perfect conditions.

The 2009 world champion scored 95.00 points to finish clear of team-mate Cai Xuetong, the 2015 world champion.

Sena Tomita of Japan progressed in third place on 90.00 points.

Japanese boarders finished first and second in the corresponding men's competition.

Naito Ando qualified first, on 92.75, in front of team-mate Ayumu Hirano, with 90.25.

Patrick Burgener of Switzerland qualified third on 86.75. 

Both finals are scheduled for Thursday (December 21) with the freestyle skiing halfpipe World Cup beginning tomorrow.

The Secret Garden resort is also due to host halfpipe competition at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games. 

Yabuli hosted the only previous snowboard halfpipe World Cup event in China in February 2011.
