Guatemala secured the men's and women's handball titles as action continued at the Central American Games in Managua.

The Guatemalan women's team narrowly beat Costa Rica 24-21 to top the podium.

Militza Lavarreda was the star of the show for Guatemala as she scored 10 goals in a dominant individual performance.

The men's side then followed suit, comfortably overcoming hosts Nicaragua 37-26 in the round-robin event.

Maynor Morales matched Lavarreda's personal haul as he found the net on 10 occasions to help guide his team to a commanding win.

The bronze medal in the women's event went to the host nation after they ousted El Salvador 33-24.

Costa Rica finished second in the men's competition after a 34-15 victory over Honduras.

Rubén Mora and Daniel López delivered success for Nicaragua as they triumphed in the men's beach volleyball event.

The Nicaraguan duo fought back from a game down to beat Andy Leonardo and Luis Garcia of Guatemala 19-21, 21-17 and 15-10 in the final.

"We knew that Guatemala was very difficult, but nobody was going to make us think that we could not win gold and with all these people supporting us," said López.

"The first set was difficult however it helped us to improve some details and we did it."

Costa Rica took home the bronze medal with a 21-14 and 23-21 win against El Salvador.

Karen Cope and Natalia Alfaro of Costa Rica earned the women's crown with a 21-12 and 21-15 triumph over Kathya Vásquez and María Fernanda of El Salvador.

Lolette Rodriguez and Swan Mendoza picked up the bronze medal for the hosts as they overcame Paola Alvarado and Stephany Bethancourt of Guatemala 21-11, 21-14.

The Central American Games is due to continue tomorrow.
