Germany's Daniel Deusser has won the opening leg of the 2017-2018 International Equestrian Federation (FEI) World Cup Jumping Western European League season in Oslo.

The 2014 FEI World Cup Jumping champion took gold at the Telenor Arena in Norway’s capital.

Deusser went clear in both rounds but his time of 36.83sec in the decisive jump-off handed him the title aboard Cornet.

France's Kevin Staut finished agonisingly behind Deusser in second.

He completed the course on For Joy van't Zorgvliet HDC with zero faults, but could only manage a time of 36.96.

Staut is currently ranked world number three and enjoyed an incredibly consistent season when topping the 2017 Western European League table.

Australia's Edwina Tops-Alexander completed the podium with her time of 38.22 in the jump-off.

Sweden’s Peder Fredricson, the newly-crowned European champion, finished outside the medal positions.

His jump-off time of 38.44 saw him miss out in fourth.

The 2017-2018 Western European League also features stops in Helsinki, Verona, Lyon, Stuttgart, Madrid, La Coruña, London and Mechelen before the end of 2017.

The action resumes in 2018 with the last four legs in Leipzig, Zurich, Bordeaux and then Gothenburg.
